Dr. Smith was born and raised in Austin. He graduated from Westwood High School and then attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas where also played baseball. He graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry. He then attended the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, earning the degree of Doctor of Medicine with honors.
Dr. Smith knew he wanted to pursue a surgical subspecialty in medical school as he gained experience and skill in the operating room. He admired vision as a special gift and his interest in the anatomy and physiology of the visual system combined with the challenge of ophthalmic surgery made ophthalmology a perfect match for him.
Upon completion of medical school, Dr. Smith was accepted into the ophthalmology residency program at Baylor College of Medicine, an institution consistently ranked among the finest training programs in the world. As a resident he was thoroughly trained in ophthalmology and learned the latest technologies the field offers.
Dr. Smith truly values the physician-patient relationship. His primary goal is to establish a good relationship with his patients and discuss in detail the findings of the eye exam and thoroughly explain the rationale for medical and/or surgical treatment if indicated.
His interests include topical small-incision cataract surgery, glaucoma, diabetes, refractive surgery and comprehensive ophthalmology, including medical and surgical treatment of many diseases of the eye. He also provides routine eye exams for contact lenses or glasses.
Dr. Smith spends most of his free time with his wife, Melissa and son, Luke. He enjoys baseball, golf and fishing.
